Region: Fukui
Fukui Prefecture is in west-central Japan and borders the sea of Japan. It is known for its rock formations that line the gorgeous coastline, and 15% of the region is designated as a natural park. Fukui is equally known for its inland rural rice farms. In fact, Japan’s most famous rice, koshi-hikari, originated here. The stunning scenery and natural lifestyle make it a great home for many. Fukui was voted the “happiest place to live in Japan” in 2014 after a national survey. The climate here is very cold with lots of snow, making it an ideal location for sake brewing. Fukui sake used to be known for its umami-forward quality, but today breweries make more dry and crisp styles. There are almost 50 sake breweries here, however, the vast majority of them are very small. For that reason, sake exports from Fukui are decreasing. All Regions »
