Region: Iwate
Iwate is a prefecture toward the north of Honshu island. Until 1870, it was separated into south and north and ruled by two different samurai families. It is known for its rich history, heavy snowfall and preforming arts. It has unprecedented tradition of folk dancing, which have been passed down for nearly 1,000 years. These dances were prayers for good harvest and fishing trips. It seems this tradition has paid off, as Iwate is known for its rich marine life, delicious wagyu, and massive soba eating contests. A famous guild of sake brewing masters, or tojis, originated from Iwate. This is called the Nanbu Toji, a highly respected title in the world of sake brewing. The main sake rice harvested in Iwate are Hana Fubuki, Miyaminishiki, Sasa Nishiki and Akita Komachi. There are nearly 30 sake breweries in Iwate, and the majority of sake made here is rich in umami and slightly on the sweet side. All Regions »
