Region: Akita
Akita is a mainly rural prefecture situated in the northwest region of Japan’s main island. It is known for its heavy snowfall, beautiful women, local cuisine and good sake. Its prime location on the coast of the Sea of Japan brings great seafood to the region, as well as Akita Komachi sake brewing rice. Another main attraction is Lake Tazawa, which is Japan’s deepest lake at 423 meters. Its cold climate, abundance of water sources and availability of good sake rice make it the perfect place to brew sake. Breweries use a local production method called “Akita Ryu”, which uses low and slow fermentation to create sake with a soft mouthfeel and light sweetness. All Regions »
